When I was young, I was taught that the Tamil month of Margazhi (Dhanur Maas, Margashira) in mid-December was unpromising. That was why wedding events were not kept in Margazhi however in the month preceding, Kaarthikai and the month following, Thai. Actually, the saying ‘தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும்’ (ways open up when the month Thai is born), convinced us that good ideas only happen in Thai– Thaipusam and Thai Ponggal. Thaipusam celebrations are to respect Lord Murugan for defeating the devil king, Padmasooran. Ponggal is a harvest celebration to appreciate Nature’s interplay that sustains us.
After that I listened to a Kannadasan track composition standard from the film ‘Paava Manippu’ (பாவமன்னிப்பு) called ‘Kaalangil Aval Vasantham’ (காலங்களில் அவள் வசந்தம்). In that song, the hero describes all his beau’s excellent characteristics. If she were a flower, she would certainly be jasmine; if she were a bird, she would be a dove and more. He takes place to claim if she were the month in the calendar, she would certainly be Margazhi. Then it struck me. Maybe Margazhi was a cold month, excellent to describe the lover, yet it was bothersome to find to go to relatives’ weddings. I was happy keeping that description. For the same factor, delivery in August was not preferable as it was the elevation of summer. With the warmth and all, puerperal blood poisoning must have been a real issue.
Currently, I am hearing brand-new points, which offers a big jolt to my contentment thus far.
Krishna declared Margazhi a special month. In fact, he explained himself as Margazhi amongst months (Masanam Margasirso hum). So, it was not an invention of the Great Poet Kannadasan’s imagination. It remains in Margazhi that the Sun starts to move northward. When one takes a look at the direction of the Sunlight, one is checking out the instructions of the Galaxy’s centre. It is an unique time for prayers. Early mornings in this month are perfect for spiritual practices. Shaivites and Vaishvanites have recitals of their scriptures. On the 11 th day of the growing moon, Vaikunda Ekathasi is celebrated. It is thought that a person of the doors to Vishnu’s residence, Vaikundam, is open for severe Vishnu worshippers.
With so much going on in this auspicious month, awakening early to boost mind and understanding, there is no time for worldly obligations like officiating wedding events.
